IN WHICH I WRITE A POST

Thursday, August 20, 2009
This sure was a long break in between posts, but if someone is expecting an explanation, well, I do not have any. I have been really busy, but not busy enough to prevent me from jotting a few lines on this blog. To tell you the truth, things have changed a lot in the past couple of months. Change of priorities as they say. Though it does not definitely mean that I haven't been following some of your posts. Keep walking...as one of my blogger friends would say.
These really are interesting times friends. When the opposition party in the world's largest democracy expels one of its senior-most members for an academic work (which arguably scratches some old wounds), you cannot help but lament at the parochial attitude of the people involved. The entire episode just demonstrates the insecurity of a political party which once prided itself on being the face of new India. What they fail to realise is that the new India they speak of has learnt to distance itself from the burden of its factious past and has well and truly moved on.
Also following with avid interest the curious case of Caster Semenya, the South African middle distance runner. Read it up if you haven't yet....this raises some difficult questions which we Indians, at least, are a somewhat accustomed to.
Been watching some movies too, notably Inglourious Basterds and Kaminey. The former signals a return to form for Quentin Tarantino, though by no stretch of imagination can it be compared to some of his earlier works. As for Kaminey, well, Vishal Bhardwaj's versatility doesn't cease to amaze me.... a Guy Ritchie-style movie from someone who made Makdee, Maqbool and Omkara.
Books, as always, are constant companions. If you have the time and the opportunity do read Etger Keret's really short short-stories... he is a genius. There have been some criticisms of his style, but he seems quite okay to me.
So long then.... have a nice time and do excuse my frequent absences.

Good to see u back.....well, we really missed u....politicians and their political hoopla continued....for the first time in history badminton edged out cricket to be front page (although in some papers)....Bolt bolted out with all accolades once again.....Vishal's strokes left me nonplussed once again, although I was little disappointed with the ending and I still consider Maqbool and Omkara better ......... books have always been a 'girl' I always wanted to fall in love with but instead falling for her friend 'movies'... Well, life continues........keep walking!!!!

Everyone's talking about 'Kaminey' being a good movie...It seems worth a watch now. And, there is always the name of some book to learn from your blog. This time, its Etger Keret's short stories...:-)

I'm so lagging behind ever since I landed up in this place : haven't watched Kaminey yet, no idea about Caster Semenya, am yet to discover Etgar Keret...I seem to have months' worth of catching up to do, once I'm back home ! :-(

As for the political rigmarole, nothing really surprises me nowadays...do you know, the TOI reported that the media of a certain neighbouring country was deriving great hilarity at 'our' expense. Now how can one react to that, except that the past seems to come in uncannily handy to politicians and political parties, once they have other and possibly more sorry skeletons to dump strategically into the cupboard !

You are in Delhi for studies, I suppose. Glad to see that you have the time ....yeah Etgar Keret weaves stories with great impact, so read him.

@Anandi
Back after a long time...you are right, not many know about Keret, maybe the language he predominantly writes in is a bit of a hindrance. I came to know about him through his work on movies and graphic novels.

@Ramesh
I understand, away from home, even the neighbour with that nosiey dog is a great friend :)

@Casurina
Once you land here, I am sure you will catch up...there certainly is no death of people interested in the books and films here.

Nice observation. It is pity to know that political parties in India always talk too much about politics. I bought a DVD of Basterds, but yet to watch it.

Tragedy!! I was hoping BJP to be the change this time.. but they have actually fucked up!! I do not use such words but am using to show my frustration of facing the prospect to be under a dud like Rahul next elections!!!

@exposemaximum
Ah! But for such pastimes of a group of ancient dinosaurs, Indian politics would be very bland. DVD, ripped copies anything goes as long as it is QT.

@shantanu das
It is not that I really like them but this fracas look very elegant. As for someone who got into Stephens on a sports quota and pretty average merit, well...there is not much to say, is there?
